PROJECT SUMMARY:
The Congo Nile Ridge Foothills Integrated Environmental Project was set up to enhance environmental protection measures and build climate resilience. It is also improving lives of Muhanga residents. For example, 670 young people are employed to manage nurseries and prepare seedlings for planting along Nyabarongo River to help prevent erosion and atop silt from entering the river. In addition, 293 water tanks will be installed across the project area, including 193 at public institutions such as medical centres.
The proposed three year project to be implemented by the Muhanga District in partnership with Caritas Diocese Kabgayi intends to promote environmental protection measures, to build climate change resilience within the local communities, and to improve the livelihoods of 29,540 households in seven Sectors (Nyabinoni, Rongi, Kiyumba, Kabacuzi, Mushishiro, Rugendabari and Kibangu) located in the Congo – Nile Ridge Foothills in the Muhanga District.
The area has undergone severe land degradation that has rendered it agriculturally unproductive, which further aggravates poverty among the inhabitants. Agricultural practices in the project intervention zone do not coincide with the slopes and erosion is a major handicap for the lives of the inhabitants. The Muvumba cell in the Nyabinoni sector has over time been exposed to climate change and is vulnerable to natural disasters including floods and landslides.
This project aims to protect the environment and sustainably manage water resources through soil protection, forest and agro-forestry tree planting and river banks protection. The project will also support the population in developing biogas plants, improving and providing access to improved cooking stoves and rain water harvesting facilities for vulnerable households whom will be resettled from a high risk zone in an adjacent sector (Nyabinoni Sector). The project will also contribute to environment protection through the establishment and servicing of terraces, the planting of trees and the improvement of livelihoods by supporting the population in improving agricultural practices by increasing productivity while also developing new income generating activities.
