Alternative Waste
Currently more than 90% of all waste that is generated in Rwanda is transported at significant cost to landfills and unlicensed dumpsites. In many instances, waste makes its way into rivers, watercourses, and onto landscapes and crops. This results in contaminated drinking-water, harmful toxins being released near residential areas and schools, and fires that cause thick plumes of smoke to stretch over Rwanda’s towns and cities.
Rwanda is analyzing multiple, alternative waste options to transition away from waste dumping to sustainable waste futures, which address the social and environmental impacts of waste. The GFF will create opportunities to fast-track implementation by identifying opportunities for investment and technical support.
